Cytecom is a spin-out company from the University of Warwick that has developed a fast, portable device for enumeration of live bacteria – the CyteCount. The CyteCount, can count and differentiate viable bacteria from inanimate matter and background. This technology is faster and more compact than any traditional culture-based microbiology technique.
The CyteCount’s patented technology exploits bacterial electrophysiology to critically assess the presence of live and dead bacteria in a solution, using fluorescent time-lapse microscopy. The detector inside the device measures the ionic charge (usually K+) stored inside individual bacterial cells. Upon electrical stimulation of the bacterial cells, the K+ ion channels open allowing the absorption of the fluorescent dye present in the agar. By monitoring the concentration of the fluorescent dye, we can differentiate live and dead bacteria enabling real time surveillance. In under half an hour, the CyteCount can count as few as a hundred and as many as 3 million bacteria in one test.
Several bioassays and techniques such as flow cytometry and bioluminescent methods are available but are not widely used due to the need of bulky equipment. The CyteCount is a small and portable device that accurately provides positive confirmation of life by dynamic signal response, giving detailed information on the viability state of the bacteria. The device comes with a user-friendly graphical interphase to enable users to easily customise settings such as shock duration according to your research needs. The speed and simplicity of the method provide significant labour and consumables savings.
